I just completed a session at the Vermont Studio Center artist residency and here are some thoughts I wrote about a year ago about the importance of this type of experience!
Working on a mostly instrumental mixtape that feels the way you feel when that first autumn wind hits you — that sense of mystery and ghosts from the past and longing for other another world. So far I have tracks by Alice Coltrane, Laraaji, Aphex Twin, Four Tet, Pharaoh Sanders, Hiroshi Yoshimura… what would you put on there? If you collect, or are starting to: what made you decide that your individual support of an artist mattered?
We’re entering a period of time when convergent thinking - coming up with the standardized answer - is more prevalent than ever. This is literally what AI is trained to do: converge to the mean. And in many ways it’s already structuring our world to look and think the same. But, we humans have access to another type of thinking - divergent thinking - that sits at the foundation of our creative brain. It’s how we think differently. Go off the beaten path. Come up with new, wild ideas. It’s about time we all start prioritizing - and celebrating - it.

Mary Magdalene by “The Master of Santa Maria Maddalena a Sietina”, 14th century. 🙏 We were transfixed by this scene of a stunningly hirsute Mary Magdalene receiving a sort of divine Uber Eats service, clearly a reference to a tale from Jacobus de Voragine’s influential Golden Legend, where she spends the last 30 years of her life living in a cave in the wilderness being fed by angels. Perhaps this is a common subject for an artistic depiction, but we had never seen it done before; and it struck us as particularly compelling.

Nina SchuylerI’m genuinely sick of ageism. Just because I look young and have a baby face you shouldn’t assume my age OR abilities. It’s mindblowing how people don’t even dare to ask things anymore and simply just assume based on appearances!
